A dramatic comedy
by Thomas Heggen & Joshua Logan

Directed by Steve Lemenille
Produced by Kay Macrae
Stage Managed by Linda Viel

Mister Roberts

This rowdy, realistic saga of a group of American sailors aboard a Navy cargo vessel in the Pacific shows the crew suffering from that deadly boredom that is part of the routine of war. To the ship's company, the Skipper is a cantankerous, small-minded man and every one of them conspires against him as the ship pursued its runs from Apathy to Tedium and back again. They are on a cargo mission, so little else is going to happen. That Mr. Roberts, [a lieutenant] shared the crew's dislike for the Captain was one reason for his popularity. Roberts joined the world to fight; he hates being inactive almost as much as he hates the Captain. Privy to the crew's hijinks against the Skipper, Roberts still feels it's his duty to retain some discipline. After winning many ingenious battles against the Skipper, Roberts at last wins himself a transfer to combat duty. It was this transfer that cost him his life on a destroyer off Japan.

"One of the outstanding successes of the modern theater. Winner of the 1948 Tony Award for best play. "The greatest of war plays…" — NY Herald-Tribune

(Stefanowski) Timothy is very pleased to be back in Westfield, having played Dick in Play It Again, Sam. A remarkably dedicated actor, Timothy prepared for the role of Stefanowski by spending ten years in the US Navy. Timothy also played Elyot in Private Lives three years ago and most recently filled a long desire by playing Charles in another Noël Coward play, Blithe Spirit in Cranford. Prior to that, he got to play five roles in A Christmas Carol in Berkeley Heights, but he typically acts in comedies here in WCP such as The Fox on the Fairway (Dickie Bell), Don’t Dress for Dinner (as Robert), Caught in the Net (John Smith), Run for Your Wife (Sgt. Porterhouse), and It Runs in the Family (Dr. Bonney). A special memory was acting in The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940, because that’s where he first met his wife, Diane. Timothy is dedicating this performance to her, and his sons Jack and Brian. To the cast, for accepting me so late in the run, fair winds and following seas!
